Half Price Christmas!

I love Christmas! I love the feeling of the season, the snow, the Christmas events, the giving. With all that is going on during this busy time if year, I try very hard to make help my family remember that Christ is the reason we celebrate Christmas. I have nativities all over the house, we do little family devotions about Christ and his life; we read Christmas books, that are not about Santa, but about Christmas Service. But I think my favorite tradition that our little family does is that the boys each make gifts for each other. It is so fun to watch them each figure out what they are going to make, and then help them make the gifts. This year Owen made Talmage some Angry Bird bean bags
, and Max some superhero finger puppets.
Talmage made Owen the cutest monster pencil holders,
and Max a stick horse.

And Max made Owen a story telling kit,
and Tal a stick horse.
It was so fun to watch them exchange their presents; I think the giver was more excited to give the gift than the receiver was to get the gift, every time. I hope that they are learning that giving is always better than recieving.

Owen said to me today two sweet little things (1) "Mom, it makes me happy to see how much Tal likes his angry birds." and (2) "Thanks Mom for helping Max make my story kit, I love it!" I almost started to cry when he said both of these things.

Although, we try have a Christ centered Christmas, Santa still makes a stop to our house. And it appears that he was very generous this year, and he was, however I happen to know that he picked up most of the items the boys received second hand. Some people may think this odd, or even wrong, after all these are gifts from Santa, they should be strait from his shop, brand new, right? Well, that is fine for other people, but Tom and I have a different philosophy... First of all we don't want our kids to think that Christmas is just about getting nice, shiney, new toys from the Man in the Red Suite. We don't want them to think that they are entitled, and will get what ever they want just because it is Christmas, and Santa will bring it. And secondly, we have some pretty rambunctious boys. I think I would be every frustrated if they broke their brand new, fresh from the factory whatever-it-is. Also, they are still young, and their interests change daily, so why should we, or Santa (whom we usually reimburse) go to great expense and give something that the kids won't care about next month? So for us, we have elected that buying Christmas gifts second hand is a great option. Now don't be concerned for the kids, they are young, and don't notice or care. Also, not only does Santa have elves who make toys, and elves that sit on shelves ( bytheway, that is super creepy), but he also has elves that their full time job is to spend the year scouring the internet, thrift stores, and garage sales for the nicest, best best quality, used stuff that is out there. Owen got hockey equipment, Tal got a bazillions Hotwheel tracks, and Max got the coolest Playhut ever. Christmas can be might nice for half the price.

My favorite gift that I gave this year was these pillow-fighting pillows. Everyone in our family received one. I made covers for them with the Classic Batman Fight words "Kapow""Biff" "Bam!".  Holy Cow the boys loved them. I see many great pillow fights in the future.hand.(
My favorite gift I received was from my mom....well, sort of. Last Friday, I had my midterm ultrasound. Tom had to work, so he could not come with me. He was feeling sad that he was not going to be there when we found out what the gender is. So I when it came to that part I'd the ultrasound, I had them tell me to look away, and had them write it down, and seal it in an envelope. Then I took the envelope to my Mom, who then went and picked out a gender appropriate gift, and wrapped it up for us to open on Christmas.  Let me tell you, I think my mom thought I might try and sneak a peak, because that thing was super wraped, we are talking layers and layers within a box that was more secure than Fort Knox, and then wrapped in festive paper that had every inch covered in tape. Have no fear, we were patient, and waited until today, and after a while, with the aid of a knife we were able to get the package open....

Apparently, we are really good at making boys. Why change what you are good at? We are having boy #4 in spring!!! I am so excited, I can not even express it. 4 Boys!! What a crazy house we will have. All the more reason to buy toys second

Happy Thanagivakkah!

Today was a rear, and by I mean rare, I mean once every 7000 years rare, day. Thanksgivakkah, in which Thanksgiving and the first day of Hanukkah fall on the same day. We are proud Americans in our house, so celebrating Thanksgiving is an obvious thing; however, we are Mormons, so to some, it may come as a surprise that we celebrate Hanukkah as well. In fact I think every Christian, especially Latter Day Saints shod celebrate The Feast of the Dedication (that's Bible talk for Hanukkah).

Hanukkah is about the Temple. It happened about 2100 years ago, during the reign of King Antiochus IV. He didn't like the ways the Jews worshipped, and started to order that they convert to Greek costumes, and order the desecration of the temple by placing idols within the temple walls. A small group of Jews, called the Maccabees, fought back, and against all odds beat the Greek legions. When the Maccabees reclaimed the temple, and went to rededicate it, they could only find enough oil to burn for one day. Miraculously, that oil burned for 8 days, until more oil could be procured, and the temple rededicated.

In my opinion, this miracle is well worth celebrating, regardless of religion. The bible indicates that Christ celebrated Hanukkah (John 10). And it was not part of the Law of Moses, so celebrating it is not lessening our respect for the Atonement.

Anyway, Hanukkah and Thanksgiving one the same day, is pretty awesome! Two holidays focused on being grateful, what an neat thing!

Day 1.

I hear people say it all the time, but I am starting to realize the truth in the words, "my baby is growing up so fast."

Today Owen started school. I can't believe how fast it crept up on me. I mean the kid has been has been begging to go to school for nearly a year now, but the day has finally come.

When I asked I'm how his first day was he reported, "It was great! It was somebodies birthday, and I got a DOUGHNUT. and I think there is a girl named Zoey in my class."  Yep the boy already has his eyes on the ladies... I better keep my eye on that.

Water Break!

I feel like I have been cooped up in my house for a week. My sweet niece, Meliah, has been here since last Friday to help me; and I feel like she has been cooped up in my house for a week. I know my boys feel like they have spent too much time at home. I guess we have had a good excuse for leaving, but you can only handle staring at the walls for so long.

Yesterday was the first time that I have felt well enough to get out, which was fortunate, because it was the first time I felt like I could drive. (I am definitely not 100%, but I believe in Fake It 'Til You Make It.)

In pursuit of excitement, I convinced my friend, Megan, that we needed to take our kids to the splash pad nearest us.

Boy, oh Boy! The kids had a great time. I think that I need to make this a weekly (maybe daily) activity! Why is there not a sash pad at every park?

My little rose tree

Ever since I was a little girl and saw Alice in Wonderland for the first time, I have wanted to have a rose tree. Last week we were at a garden center, looking at magnolia trees; when I turned around, there it was, my rose tree.

I got so excited. There it was, my childhood garden dream right before my eyes! So Tom picked it up, and brought it home for me. However, they told us, when we bought it, not to expect many blossom this year. Which was fine with me, I can be patient.

On Wednesday night, Tom decided that next to the rose tree was an appropriate place to bury the baby. I agreed. And we preformed a midnight burial.

Today, I went out side for the first time since Wednesday (I lost a lot of blood, and can't really walk well, but Tom helped walk around the yard). A single red rose has blossomed on the tree, right above the baby. The boys now call the tree the Baby Tree.

I think I will always love this tree.

Memorial Fun

I can honestly say that Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays. It is right up there with Christmas. It is the one day of the year that the entire Strong Family sets aside to be together. I am talking more than my siblings (which they do as well), but my cousins, my aunts and uncles, my grandparents. It is fabulous, and I look forward to it every year.
We have an epic breakfast cook out. All the best breakfast foods you can imagine, with some of your favorite people; homemade rockets shooting off into the air; baseball; sword fighting; How can it get better?

Well I will tell you: my parents then preceded to have a grand party at their house for just their little family. Barbecue, water slides, grandkids. Sounds like a recipe for good times to me. And let me assure you, it was.

Check out the rocket!

Rocket launch with Grandpa.

Sadly, the rocket did not survive.

Have you ever played on a deflated, blow-up water slide? I am not sure which they liked more, sliding down it when it was inflated and wet, or rolling around in it when it was dry and flat.

And to top it off, I gave Tom a mullet. (Word to the wise, NEVER ask you wife to cut your hair during a family party, you might end up like this:)

LOSS

A busy day at work
A spot of blood
A moment of fret
A call to the midwife
Another spot of blood
A long nap
A loving husband
A spot of blood
Why won't the blood stop?

A beautiful blessing
A good nights rest
A lazy morning
A feeling of peace
A reclined afternoon
A meal from a friend
A cramp
A lost appetite
A rush to the toilet
A single moment of loss
A scream for help
A loving husband
A lot of blood
A call to the midwife
A tearful bath
A red bath
A long shower
A red tub
Why won't the bleeding stop?

A concerned husband
A knowledgeable midwife
An amazing mother-in-law
A rush to the pharmacy
A perfectly cooked steak
A hundred thousand tears
A burial by a rose tree
A somber sleepless night
A hug from a son
A tear from another
A very sad family
When will this bleeding heart stop?
